The ABRSM music exams encourage students to learn how to become an all-round musicians. They need a range of complimentary skills, not only in performance and technique but also in notation, listening and musical perception. This is where music theory and music aural skills come into play.

Music schools and university courses also require these skills within their learning cycles but they are subjects only lightly touched in school, unless you are going to specialise in music.
